TSE/TATTERSALLS SPRING SALE 2009
DESPITE AN UP AND DOWN MARKET,
PERFORMANCE SELLS

In 2001, Keeneland's Assistant Sales Director Geoffrey Russell was quoted as saying "despite an up and down market, performance sells." His words ring prophetic still, as one examines the results of The Spring Sale held at the Tattersalls Pavilion on April 10 and 11, eight years later. "Given the state of the economy, our focus was to remain consistent with the tradition of the sale itself, and to maintain its integrity in a difficult market," stated TSE/Tattersalls President Ed Teater. Successful beyond that measure, The Spring Sale saw an increase in averages over last spring, with performance horses driving the marketplace.

The first of two annual TSE/Tattersalls sales held in Lexington, Kentucky, holds long on tradition. Held at the historic pavilion of The Red Mile, a location established in 1875, the oldest light horse market has evolved over the years, before resting under the guidance of Teater Saddlebred Enterprises, Inc. more than 20 years ago. Buyers attended the Spring 2009 session again with the hope that begins each new season as they studied the catalogue of 300 entrants.

A $50,000.00 ticket for Simbara's Sandcastle showcased the sale. This consignment was one of a multiple offering from Dr. and Mrs. Simon Fredricks of Houston, Texas, Carter Cox, Woodstock Farm, Agent, Danville, Kentucky. Selling the last of their Simbara Farms horses after an illustrious career spanning 38 years of dedication to breeding the best provided a potential of opportunity for the Fredricks and the sale company to add to their list of celebrated alumni. Simbara's Sandcastle should be no exception. The 2008 Reserve Titleholder of the Three-Year-Old Three-Gaited Sweepstakes Championship and the UPHA Classic at Indianapolis Charity entered the ring after an additional year under the direction of Carter Cox. A winter of hard work and maturation had this educated junior horse looking primed and expectant for his 2009 debut. Simbara's Sandcastle is by World's Champion Castle Bravo. His dam is the well-respected Simbara's Special Someone, and his second dam is the renowned Hall of Fame Broodmare Denmark's Radiant Society. This exceptionally bred young gelding demonstrates a proven lineage that should resume noted ring success for new owner, Douglas Dailey, Louisville, Tennessee.

Douglas Dailey emphasized his determination to add exceptional horses to his stable by also placing his signature on the $32,000.00 ticket bearing Lot # 57. At The Stroke Of Midnight, consigned by Kathrine Abbott Conflenti, Zionsville, Indiana, was presented to the public with agent Mike McIntosh, Whitestown, Indiana, in the irons. The established five-gaited contender has had considerable success in the show ring, including Amateur Championships at Tampa Charity and Mid-America Mane Event last year, and wins at Rock Creek and ASHAV. Charismatic and commanding in the pavilion, the impressive gelding wore the bridle with experience as he entertained the bidding with attitude and talent. This proven campaigner is destined to continue his formidable career under the direction of Leon Richardson, agent for the purchaser.

A half brother to the sale-topping Simbara's Sandcastle looked an outstanding prospect for purchaser Walter Healey, Scenic Heights Farm, Mequon, Wisconsin. Lighting up the ring and the bid-board, Simbaraís Saturday Night was shown under saddle by agent Carter Cox, as a selection from the Simbara Farms consignment. Well started and wearing a snaffle bit with precision, this two-year-old chestnut gelding inspired the gallery as the board settled on the $32,000.00 asking price. There was no hesitation among bidders as the elegant son of CF First Night Out made his debut for the public offering. His dam is a full sister to World's Grand Champion CH A Sweet Treat, World's Champions CHRejoice, CHThe Radiant Prince, and more. Ears up and delighted to entertain, he showed an impressive, square trot and a willing work ethic. Simbara's Saturday Night sold with engagements to both the Kentucky and the National Three-Year-Old Futurities.

I'm Lucky Too was consigned by Dena Tanner Lopez, Versailles, Kentucky, with Gregory Maldonado, Springfield, Kentucky, in the irons as agent. Catalogued as ready for an amateur or juvenile rider, this junior gelding was impressive and sound in five gaits. Taking ownership of the gallery as he stepped through the in-gate, this handsome chestnut demanded bidders' attentions with a huge trot and a marked slow gait. Activity among the attendees was noted quickly, and bidding ensued with a final $25,000.00 price on the bid-board. Harold Denton, Jr. signed the slip for Bullet Concrete Materials, Inc., Conrad, Texas.

Virgil Helm had a finished product when he showed Radio Flyer to five gaits in the sale ring. Impeccably turned out and professionally mannered, the bay gelding has already had accomplishment in the show ring, garnering blues at such prestigious shows as The American Royal and Lexington Junior League. Willing to go the distance, and then dropping back to a flat walk, he seemed an excellent choice to continue in the top amateur or juvenile divisions. Heath Hughes signed the $16,000.00 ticket for purchase on behalf of Kaitlin Hughes, Bulls Gap, Tennessee. Radio Flyer was a consignment from Alice Sias Pippin Revocable Trust, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

A consignment from C. Jean and Christopher Nalley, Louisville, Kentucky, the aptly named Temptress In Town was just that as she enticed the public into a final $11,000.00 asking price to change ownership. Extremely athletic, this young mare enjoyed her work and never let down during her time on stage, with Tiffany Wheeler up for agent Autumn Hills Farm, Simpsonville, Kentucky. Breeding backed up her attitude and demeanor; her dam is the Five-Gaited Amateur Mare Worldís Champion Worthyís Temptress. This purchase came with a handsome resume, which included the 2008 Shelby County Fair Three-Year-Old Five-Gaited Championship. Just a junior horse, this gifted chestnut mare has a full and promising career in front of her for new owner Donald Reece, Talking Rock, Georgia.

Simbara's Anthracite, another selection from the Simbara Farms offering, attracted attention as she entered the pavilion. In foal, the junior black mare proved she wasnít compelled to rest on her status as she performed five gaits for the gallery. Under saddle and in a full bridle, this delightful mare set out to prove that ìyou can have it all,î earning a $11,000.00 bid from Bruce and Rusty Rademann, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Simbara's Anthracite is by County Treasure and out of Airs, a half sister to Worldís Grand Champion sire Worldís Champion Harlem Globetrotter, Worldís Champion Yorkshire Pudding, Worldís Champion Manhattan Airs, World's Champion sire Yorktown Magic, among other notables. Both her second and third dams are Hall of Fame Broodmares. Simbara's Anthracite sold in foal to Simbara's Living Legend, a young full brother to World's Grand Champion CHA Sweet Treat, etc. This beautiful, well-bred, black mare was fit and attentive, and one would expect that a long and productive career awaits her.

Kay Marschel, Lewisville, Texas, consigned the experienced Talledega Red, who was presented with Dena Lopez, Versailles, Kentucky, up as agent for the seller. Already seasoned and professional, this six-year-old gelding looked both comfortable and commanding during his ring work. Shown in 2008 in Park Pleasure to blues in both qualifiers and championships at Rock Creek, Asheville Lions Club and River Ridge, the homework was done and he seemed ready for a career in the amateur division. Talledega Red was consistent in the bridle as he performed three gaits with enthusiasm, exhibiting a big trot consistent with his size. Ears up and dependable, he earned a $10,500.00 ticket and is now the property of Amanda Vestal, Kearney, Missouri.

The accomplished Hillside's Sensation impressed upon Jennifer or Steve McGowan, Cross Lanes, West Virginia, to add their $10,500.00 signature for ownership. She boasts a 2007 Reserve Worldís Championship in Three-Gaited Park Mares, and was catalogued as ready for an amateur rider. Expertly presented by Mike McIntosh, up for agent Sunrise Stables, Versailles, Kentucky, the chestnut mare exhibited both elegance and expression in her carriage during her stay. She is by Reserve World's Champion sire Classic Memories and out of CSF Twice Supreme, making her a full sister to Three-Gaited Park Amateur Stallion/Gelding Reserve Worldís Champion CHTax Man.

TSE/Tattersalls Spring Sale average per horse sold was $3,011.00, reflecting an 8.3% increase over last year's same seasonal sale average. Outs remained a low 17%, while RNA's (Reserves Not Attained) climbed slightly to 11%. Performance horses commandeered the venue, indicating a continued enthusiasm for the show ring, even in an unpredictable economy.
